So, another sketch in Exeter this time showing off some rather contrasting residential properties on a random road found using the randomise button. Pretty much chalk and cheese here and definitely deserved the sketch to show it. Luckily it came out really nicely as well which is always a good thing. So now, the only question is. Which ones would you choose?

Till next time!

So, back to some more houses today though still in Exeter. I think these jumped out to me while randomly hitting the randomise button on the streetview site was because they were made up of grey stone rather than the usual red brick and had a small village and old look to them, despite being in the built up suburbs. Interestingly, the sketch didn’t take all that long for how much I managed to get into it and I think the lack of trying to represent the colour of the stone helped the sketch pop and the details stand out, unlike the previous days.

Till next time!

Day 637:  86-94 Heavitree Rd, Exeter (St Lukes Campus)

So, another sketch from Exeter this time of a  fairly recognisable building (provided you enter Exeter from Heavitree end anyway) in the form of one of the campuses of the Exeter University, housed in this old building here. Quite a imposing building as well with quite a stately look to it and I’d imagine makes for a lovely university inside (not that I’m that likely to go into there to find out). The sketch was quite fun as well though I think I managed to make it a bit to similar in tone throughout so might want to watch that in the future.

So, will come straight in with the fact that I’m not the biggest fan of this sketch. However, the same can be said for the actual buildings at which point, your all probably wondering why I bothered sketching a building that I don’t really like but my argument would be that I don’t need to like a building to want to sketch it and, its the whole fact that I have never thought it fitted in that made me decided to sketch it.

Of course there is another issue, which is that none of you probably have any idea what the rest of the hospital looks like it so I may have to get a sketch of that going at some point.

So, not to sure what I think about this one and the sky is definitely too messy but oh well, the subject is pretty interesting still. Never actually seen these buildings as I never went too university (let alone to Exeter as I’ve been led to believe its a pretty hard university to get into) and never had any reason to be on the campus but I liked the view of the different buildings arranged together. So there we go not much else to say about this one so I’ll leave it there.

Till next time!

633: Exeter Bus Station

633: Exeter Bus Station

Time taken: 30 minutes

So, this was a bit of a random one but I think I’m a bit obsessed with public transit and networks as I seem to have found a Bus Station an interesting subject to sketch. Used this particular bus station quite a lot as well as unsurprising its the main one in Exeter (what with Exeter only having a population of about 120k, it doesn’t exactly need a huge amount of public transport or network links). Quite liked trying to get the angles of all the buses correct as well when doing the sketch and I don’t think I did that bad a job with it in the end.

Day 625: Devon House, Paris St, Exeter (Waterstones)

Time taken: 35 minutes

So, were still in Exeter today but we’ve moved into the actual town, in fact, pretty much up to the other end of the town with a look at the Waterstones found at the cross roads, also inhabited by Next, John Lewis and some other building that keeps changing hands every year.

Anyway the sketch was done quickly as I wasn’t really enjoying it but I  actually like how it came out in the end which is a very pleasant surprise and not one I’m going to complain at. Not sure what you guys will think of it but there we go. Plus the angle of the left hand side of the buildings bottom was really odd and hard to get right so I’m using that as an excuse if you don’t.

Till next time!

Time taken: 30 minutes

So, moving into town this time with this iconic Clock Tower at the end Queens St (along which the aforementioned Exeter Central St. lies). Funnily enough, having looked into the history of this clock tower while trying to find its name, its a really, really ornate horse trough, so there you go. You learn something new every day.

Anyway I thoroughly enjoyed the sketch. Went a bit quicker with this one as you might be able to tell from the roughness but I quite like that about it. I also purposefully made the background of it even sketchier and out of focus to try and make the focus and foreground pop a bit more.

Not sure if I really achieved it but nevermind, I’m not that bothered as I enjoyed it and that’s the main thing.

Till next time!

Day 623: Station Rd, Exeter (St Davids St)

Time taken: 35 minutes

So, we’ve left London and headed south west to somewhere a lot closer to home for me arriving at Exeter St Davids with this sketch of a view from the level crossing at the end of the station.

Not much to say about the station as its not much different from that of any other terminus station of around the country. Hell I haven’t really used the station that much to actually know all that much about it as I usually use the central station, I just liked the view of the platforms with the several trains so decided to sketch them and thoroughly enjoyed doing so, so as usual…

Till next time!
