Day 722: Street Food (Tuxpan 11A, Roma Sur, 06760 Cuidad de Mexico, Mexico City)
Reference view: map street view
Time taken: 30 minutes
So, something a bit different for yesterdays sketch in the form of this street market in Mexico City. Wanted to try and improve on my figures a bit so choose this scene as it had a few standing around in it. and some interesting stalls to draw for the background. not too sure how I like how it came out as I like the figures in it but the actual sketch looks a bit disjointed and not as refined as the ones that I usually do. Still I like the people and as they were my main point of the sketch I’m considering it a win!
Till next time!
Day 379: Cheesecake in a Jar!
Source: Personnal Photo
So, nearly a week ago now we went out for a meal at the pub in Kilmington (The New Inn) as a send off to one of my wifes friends who is heading off to uni sometime soon (she may even be there already). Anyway, we had a lovely meal (I had Chilli Con Carne and I think my wife had Sausage and Mash) and for dessert, my wife ordered a cheesecake which came out like this in a jar and was definitely too good an opportunity to photograph and sketch.
Really enjoyed this sketch as well. Getting the shapes of everything down in perspective was a bit tricky but I think i managed it in the end. I think rather weirdly that my favourite part of the actual sketch is the table rather than the subject that i was trying to focus on. I like the shadows and the woodgrain that was on the table and I think the small bunch of redcurrants came out nicely as well.
Anyway, as you all know I have a boat load of sketches to upload to catch us back up so I’ll be back in a few minutes with another one for you all. (I actually will this time, rather than saying I will then falling asleep)
Day 221: Easter Egg!
So firstly Happy Easter everyone, hope you all had a lovely day!
So obviously a good choice of subject for today would be a Easter Egg so, not wanting to disappoint, here’s a Easter Egg.
So, given that a whole egg would have been boring, I smashed one in half and decided to draw the resulting mess instead (I also wanted to eat some so smashing it made that easier.). I’m also really happy with how it came out which is nice as I didn’t think I’d get the depth in it.
One thing I may do is go back to doing some of the colour drawings, though I’m not to sure so will have to see. I’m also not to sure where I put the coloured pens which might make coloured pictures hard but such is life.
Anyway, I hope you all had a lovely Easter and haven’t made yourselves too ill with the eggs you’ve got!
Day 176: Steak and Kidney Pie
So as mentioned yesterday I turned 27 today. Nothing much has changed form being 26 but then again nothing much changed from 25 to 26 (actually technically its a lie saying that turning 27 was no different from previous birthdays on account of me being a Dad now). Anyway as it was my birthday my parents made up a meal for me in the form of lovely Steak and Kidney Pie. So I thought hey, why not, lets try and draw a portion of it.
Quite an interesting and challenging sketch really given that I choose to do it in black and white and that it has a fair amount of different textures and colours in it. Not sure how well it comes across as Steak and Kidney pie but I don’t think its a awful representation of it. At least it looks like some kind of food.
I also can’t believe that I’m only 6 days off of having been doing this for half a year. Need to think of something to do for the half a year mark but I think I have an idea. If you guys have any suggestions let me know though, would love to hear how you think I should mark the occasion!
Day 160: Ummmmmmm Donuts!
So today was a bit of a grab something and draw day which turned out really well with this plate and some hastily (though of course artistically arranged donuts that I picked up from work).
As I said above I really liked this drawing and how it turned out, especially the bag in the background and the plastic acetate thing that actually looks like plastic (or at least I think it does).
Generally I just really like this sketch and although I know I’ve said it before but I like the sketchiness of using the ballpoint pens .
However I don’t really have much more to say about it so I’ll just let you all get hungry looking at donuts unless you don’t like donuts in which case, my bad.
Day 115: Coffee Jar attempt 2!
So today I decided to give a sketch that I’d done before another go today on account of the fact that the original one didn’t turn out very well. This coffee jar of which you can see the original here link to original sketch.
Well, I can safely say that today’s attempt turned out a lot better than day 71’s attempt at the same subject (which hopefully shows that I’m improving my observational and recording skills) but its still off. I’d like to think this is just down to it being a really awkward shape but I think I may have messed up the perspective in it at some point (I think the biggest culprit might be the label). I do want to get a accurate drawing of this jar at some point so maybe if I just give it another 80 or so days I’ll have improved again and it won’t look awkward.
Of course it may end up being one of them things where I don’t ever get it done correctly and I end up with a entire blog of coffee jar attempts but we’ll have to cross that bridge when it comes to it.
I’ve also realised in this post that if you guys haven’t seen any of the flaws that I’ve noticed myself, me stating them all might be ruining some of the drawings for you (that’s assuming you lot are still reading these posts). I think I may have to try and find some sort of spoiler tag (I think the read more tag does the same thing) so you can choose whether you read it or not, would like to here your opinions on this.
Anyway I need to go sleep so……
Day 146: Chilli
Pretty simple and obvious sketch for today (or at least I hope its obvious by the title) and that was our Chilli dinner. Now this was obviously done form a photo of the plate rather than the actual dinner (due mainly to me not wanting to have a stone cold plate of Chilli).
So there we have it a plate of chilli (or what I hope at least resembles chilli). The view that its drawn from is a bit odd and rice is a pain in the butt to try and draw accurately and with detail but the actual chilli doesn’t actually look that bad and if you look at it from a slight distance it looks pretty realistic.
Also just in case anyone looks at the chilli and wonders why there’s random orange bits in it, this isn’t really bad perception of the chilli but pieces of carrot. Not strictly a chilli ingredient (neither are mushrooms) but as it was made from the remains of a Bologna sauce and tasted good anyway, I’m just rolling with it.
So there we have it, in theory if we just eat something different everyday then I could keep drawing new things everyday from the meals. This may at some point get a bit tedious though so I might need to start doing some random internet daily sketches.
God I hate making decisions. Anyway I appear to have started rambling so I’m going to stop here and leave you all in peace. Or at least…..
