Day 491: Reindeer
Reference image: Google search for Reindeer though trying to find this exact image again is a bit of a challenge so sorry for that.
So, coming up to Christmas I decided that it might be nice to do some more Christmas sketches rather than the comic ones that I’d done in the days before so decided to sketch a Reindeer because you know, Christmas and all.
Anyway I actually really like how the actual sketch came out and it looks a lot more accurate than I thought it would while sketching it. Funnily enough one of the bits of the sketch that I actually really like is the foliage along the bottom which really shouldn’t be interesting at all but there you go, apparently I like it a lot.
Anyway, that s the first of the Christmas sketches (or at least i think it is, its been a while since I blogged anything though so I might be wrong). Got a couple more to upload so will see you then!
Day 487: Pride
Reference image: Again, I accidently closed the tab that the image was open in and can’t seem to find it in my history sorry. The google search however, was lion roaring.
So, another change in choice of subject fro yesterday, brought on by trying to get my son to sleep and having to listen to ‘Can you feel the love tonight’ over and over again (song from the Lion King in case you were wondering where the connection was). Definitely, one of the better sketches that I’ve done recently, this one came out really nicely for the amount of time that I spent on it and for how loose the lines and concentration on it was.
So, that’s everything all caught up again, today not included which is better. Hopefully tomorrow I can get both today’s and tomorrow’s up then we’ll be properly caught up but we’ll have to see.
Day 388: Huge Fossil at Charmouth!
Source: Personal photo
So, a few days ago I sketched the Charmouth Coast Heritage centre for you all. Well, this fossil was one of the ones that can be found inside the small centre/museum and it’s huge, easily 60cm+ in width and, given that I really enjoyed sketching the fossil that I drew a while back I had to take a photo of this one and sketch it as well.
So, ignoring the awkward cropping of the table that it stands on I really like the outcome of the actual fossil and I learnt a few things while sketching it to by actually trying to accurately copy the photo rather than assuming that I knew where light would fall (because in this case, I would have been a fair bit wrong half the time). Anyway, I was really happy with the final outcome of the sketch and the actual fossil didn’t really take that long to do either as it was quite scribbly.
Right one more down nd one more to go for tonight so again, I hope you enjoy looking at the fossil as much as I did sketching it and I see you all in a minute with the final upload for tonight!
Day 386: Stumpy the bear!
Source: Personal Photo
So the other day we decided to go for a walk in Trinity Woods which are a short drive from us and a place I frequently visited when I was younger with the Cubs and the Scouts. Deciding it would be nice to go for a short walk up there we managed to end up getting a bit lost and ended up walking for several hours as opposed to the short walk we intended to have. Anyway while doing so we passed this really funky looking tree stump at the side of the road that looked a hell of a lot like a bear head as you approached it.
Deciding this would make for a pretty interesting sketch I snapped a photo and, well, sketched it. Hopefully, you can also see the bear head int he stump although I seem to have skewed the perspective a bit somehow though I couldn’t work out how but nevermind I like the outcome of it still.
Right, that’s three posts made today so I’ve caught up a little bit but will have to try and get some more up tomorrow as I’m a bit typed out now.
Day 382: Dinotopia Strutter Fanart
Source: James Gurney here’s his site, the actual image is from one of his Dinotopia books.
Bit of a different sketch for day 382 where I went and took an image I liked from one of my favourite books in regards to artwork, Dinotopia in the form of the mechanical strutter that Arthur and his companions find in the cavern (minus its head piece as this was an image after it had been lost). The vehicle itself is meant to be a triceratops, though its a bit harder to tell without its signature head.
Really happy with this sketch as I managed to get most of the details down and the actual sketch looks like it would work rather than the perspective or scales being off. Pushing the values also helps define the look of the machine and its individual parts.
Anyway, that was day 382’s sketch. I’ve got 4 more to go until we’re all caught up so I should probably get on with it and get some more posts up.
Day 378: Cricket
Source: Personal photo
So, just as the title suggests, this was a sketch of my attempts at wildlife photography, or more accurately, a quickly taken snapshot of one of the many noisy crickets in our back garden taken while hanging the washing out.
Quite an interesting outcome to the sketch as the background is way darker than what it was in the photo but I needed to figure out how to make the cricket stand out and this was the only way that I could think of doing so. It’s not too bad though as you can still make out the grass and leafs in the background but yes, it’s a bit darker than I would have wanted.
I do like that I managed to get it actually looking like a cricket though as some parts of it were a bit hard to make out in the photo against the leafs and grass (as I suppose the cricket intended). Anyway. as I said I do like it and it was a nice quick sketch to do (although you can’t see it I think it ended up being smaller than A6 for the actual sketch and placed really weirdly on the page, I’m just going with artistic licence)
Right, that’s another day caught up n and I need to go get some sleep now as I have to be up in 5 hours for work. Will be back tomorrow with some more catching up to hopefully do!
Day 374: Dragonfly
So, apologies for the delay in getting all of the last few days uploaded. It’s been rather hectic and I only just had time to get all the sketches done let along upload them but I thought I’d get this one uploaded and let you know that I haven’t suddenly stopped doing them and I am up to date with the sketches (just finished day 377) just not with the uploading.
Right, so I have time to get one uploaded tonight so here’s a sketch of a Dragonfly.
Source: Personal picture at Stourhead
So, another Stourhead photo but this time it’s of a Dragonfly on one of the bodies of water there. This little thing flew really close to us and didn’t really seemed phased at all that we were close to it which was good as it allowed me to get some clear photo’s and I thought it would make a good sketch.
Now although I still like the idea of sketching it I think I need to find out a way to effectively cross hatch a large area so it doesn’t look as messy as it does in the above sketch although, you can still kind of make it out as water.
Other than that there’s not really a lot to say. I like the actual dragonfly itself as well as its shadow (it’s the simple things sometimes).
Anyway, as I said I’ve got several more to upload just no time at the moment so I’ll leave you with this one and hopefully be back tomorrow to upload some more (though I do have a really full day so I’m not crossing my fingers).
Till then (hopefully)
Day 353:Quick Moth Sketch
So yesterday I didn’t have very much time to sketch anything, what with the wedding and the little one so I had to choose something simple and quick to sketch. Luckily several days ago I had taken a photo of an interesting looking moth on the wall in our house and decided to sketch that instead.
Quite like how it came out in the end despite how quick a sketch it was.I didn’t think it was going to turn out well at all while sketching it so am pretty happy with how it came out int he end.I do like that there is parts of the pattern that you find on the back of moths and butterflies visible as I was finding it hard to mirror it while sketching it (to be honest I was half asleep at the time).
Got another sketch to upload in a minute for you all as well so I’ll finish up this one here and be back in a bit with the next one
Day 346: Village Show Dressage
So yesterday was the annual Axmouth Village show where quite a large part of the village turn up for a day of the normal village show stuff of displays by local groups as well as the competition tent with entries from around the village and area. Anyway one of the displays that happen in the centre of the field this year was this guy and his animals.
Now this guy did some fancy kind of Dressage (at least I think it’s that, I don’t really have much of an idea when it comes to horses) but he also had some falcons with him that did some displays while he was on horseback, pretty funky stuff.
So I thought this photo of him that I captured would make a nice daily sketch so went with this. Now, being completely honest with you this is the second sketch that I did of the subject as the first time that I did it the scales of the riders and the horse were awful and completely off and created a horrible sketch.
Luckily the second one turned out by far, a hell of a lot better than the first attempt and is actually a piece I’m pretty happy with, especially given my lack of animal drawings in the past.
Anyway, that was yesterday’s sketch and I have today’s to hopefully show you in a few minutes.
