So, a small but detailed sketch for today with a look at some more unique and out of place architecture, looking like something you’d see in an English countryside village rather htna in the middle of New York but there you go, more interesting sketch subjects for me! Really enjoyed doing this one as well with all its details, especially the timber framing. Looking at this though I may have to try and make the stippling in the sky either less uniform or denser as it looks a bit like rain here but, I still love the sketch!

Till next time!

Some more houses for today, chosen due to the shapes of them and the random stone pattern on the partially drawn building tot he left. It was also a snowy scene so tried to show that on the ground (which was the only place that the snow was). Buildings turned out a bit narrow but I don’t think it matters all that much to the sketch in its whole and I like the final results so I’m happy with it and I hope you guys like it too!

Bit of a another simple one for yesterdays sketch with this look at a café on a street corner. Choose it as it had a subway entrance in it and thought that would be interesting as a subject in the sketch. Unfortunately, I messed up the proportions and composition and only was able to get half the subway entrance in the sketch so in that respects I failed the sketch. luckily though the rest of the sketch came out quite nicely so it wasn’t a complete failure after all!

So, bit of a different one for today with a look at a industrial unit rather than the house or a apartment block/ shop front. Quite enjoyed it as well even if it is a really simple looking composition I just really liked the look of the lorry parked in the bay and the shadowed trailers in several of the other bays. Not much more to say about it however other than I tried stippling the sky this time which worked out a bit better than the cross hatched one I tried several days ago (or at least I think so).

Another house for today with some lovely contrast in the white railings and red brick building. I’m also loving how different the town houses in New York seem to be in comparison to the one next to them, unlike the copy and paste housing estates that I’m used to here in the UK (though I’m sure that the US has a load of copy and paste housing areas too, just these in New York don’t seem to much like that). ANother fun sketch!

Also, as a bonus I did this small A6 piece of my father in law refuelling his Chipmunk plane in pen and ink which I really like the outcome of (The sky looks a lot better than yesterdays attempt lol!)

So, back to the style that seems to be my go to one over the last couple of weeks with a closer look at the building on the left of the previous sketch. Tried to get the same style that I have used as mentioned above but also tried to add some rendering for the sky which I’m not sure worked very well.

I do love the shop fronts though and especially the bar to the right of the image with its suits of armour flanking the doorway which is what drew me to the scene. Mainly as it reminded me of what is probably one of my favourite bars ever, located in Prague (that ironically enough I can’t remember the name of) it was a medieval themed tiny bar lit by fake candles and was the first place we ate in on our honeymoon. Anyway enough of that soppy stuff, I hope you like the sketch (ignoring the sky).

So, wanted to try a different view for today and ended up also using a different approach to the sketch and the way its sketched, ending up with a much looser interpretation than the ones we’ve seen lately. Not really that sure whether I like this approach though and I have to admit this was my third go at it as the other two had completely whacky perspectives and measurements that really didn’t make me happy with the sketch.

Luckily perseverance paid off in the end and as the finished sketch is pretty nice, and although I’m not sure what I think of the style it was fun to scribble bits of the sketch when laying it down and still come up with something nice in the end. Anyway I need to go to sleep so I’ll see you all tomorrow!

So, this was a bit of a weird one and definite sketch as I managed to fine this really random looking townhouse in the middle of Brooklyn with some sort of weird case of identity crisis. Yes, it has some wooden framing on the outside and yes, it does look as out of place as that sounds like it should in the middle of New York. So glad I randomly clicked on this street as it really did make me double take and smile and, as a added bonus the sketch came out pretty nicely as well. All in all a fun and successful little sketch!

Till next time!

So, more street shop fronts as I seem to be a bit obsessed with them and am still really enjoying the subject. Yesterday I choose to do a couple of them rather than just one as I thought they made for quite a well composed sketch subject with their unique heights and architectural styles to each of the three shop fronts (well, ok technically there are four of them but two share the centre building.) Really fun sketch to do even if it did take nearly an hour, and does look a little bit dark (though I’m beginning to not mind this as much and just accept it as a part of the technique I’ve got going on). Not sure what you guys think about it though. At least I feel that they’re definitely improving!

Till next time!
