Day 645: Paignton Railway St, Devon

Time taken: 30 minutes

So, with this sketch I decided to start a railway journey up the south coast of Devon via the railway stations that I can get a good view of in google streetview starting here at Paignton. Quite a nice little station with  a level crossing (that I didn’t realise were as common as they seem to be) which offered a nice view straight up the station rails towards the waiting train. Enjoyable sketch as well, with some interesting perspectives and angles which I think I managed to capture, albeit in a loose way with some artistic licence thrown in and a good start to this railway journey.

Till next time!

Day 644: Station Restaurant, Dartmouth

Day 644: Station Resturant, Dartmouth

So, another sketch from inside Dartmouth this time of the old station restaurant which, apparently was built as a railway station intended as a terminus but instead, they decided to scrap the idea and just put the station on the other side of the river in Kingswear (which I should probably try and get a sketch of but nevermind). Quite a odd thing to build the station first but oh well, its makes for a interesting restaurant.

Unfortunately the sketch didn’t turn out as well as I’d hoped. I think I may have chosen a slightly weird angle to have drawn it on and just struggled with it but I learnt some more about perspective so I don’t mind and I’m sure you guys don’t mind the occasional blip either!

Till next time!

Day 643: Dartmouth Upper Ferry

Day 643: Dartmouth Upper Ferry

So, this was a fun little sketch that came out a lot better than I thought it would while sketching it, where were still in Dartmouth and this time looking at one of the more unique modes of transport that you’ll find there in the form of a chained car ferry across the river. This is the Upper one ( there another one at the other end of the town called the lower Ferry (surprisingly enough)) and something that I’ve been across a fair few times in my life when we visited the town so thought I would give it a sketch as we were in the area.

Plus, who doesn’t like boats?

Till next time!

Day 642: St Petrox church, Dartmouth

Day 642: St Petrox church, Dartmouth

So, this was a lovely little church that we walked past a month or so ago when we visited Dartmouth Castle (which this church is attached too). Really nice place as well that had a lovely view overlooking the mouth of the river Dart (apparently you can occasionally see dolphins here as well).

Really liked the how the sketch came out for what was a shorter sketch than the other ones have been even if it does look a bit rough in places.

Till next time!

So, decided to do this one as quickly as possible and a little looser than I had been doing as I wanted to try and get a panoramic view of Dartmouth Harbour which, has got to be one of the strangest harbours ever as its basically a square reservoir connected to the river Dart by a low tunnel which passes underneath the main road and a wide promenade so yer, not the most boat friendly harbour (definitely no sails anyway). Quite like the outcome of the sketch too. True its very loose and some bits a unclear but I like the amount of detail I managed to get into it!

Day 640: Knapps Cottages, Kilmington

So, took this lovely photo of these cottages of the village where my wife grew up and has family, and where I actually lived when I started this blog so has featured before several times. I haven’t (as much as I can remember anyway) ever sketched these lovely cottages before so, while walking past them the other day decided to take a photo and go for it with the sketch. Really glad I did as well as it came out pretty nicely, especially how the sketch seems to focus quite well on the two cottages.

So, another sketch in Exeter this time showing off some rather contrasting residential properties on a random road found using the randomise button. Pretty much chalk and cheese here and definitely deserved the sketch to show it. Luckily it came out really nicely as well which is always a good thing. So now, the only question is. Which ones would you choose?

So, back to some more houses today though still in Exeter. I think these jumped out to me while randomly hitting the randomise button on the streetview site was because they were made up of grey stone rather than the usual red brick and had a small village and old look to them, despite being in the built up suburbs. Interestingly, the sketch didn’t take all that long for how much I managed to get into it and I think the lack of trying to represent the colour of the stone helped the sketch pop and the details stand out, unlike the previous days.

Till next time!

So, another sketch from Exeter this time of a  fairly recognisable building (provided you enter Exeter from Heavitree end anyway) in the form of one of the campuses of the Exeter University, housed in this old building here. Quite a imposing building as well with quite a stately look to it and I’d imagine makes for a lovely university inside (not that I’m that likely to go into there to find out). The sketch was quite fun as well though I think I managed to make it a bit to similar in tone throughout so might want to watch that in the future.

Till next time!
