Day 558: Whitby Chapel, Yorkshire

Day 558: Whitby Chapel, Yorkshire

Reference image:  Pinterest linkie!

So, for today I decided to sketch this old ruined chapel in Whitby, Yorkshire. Something I would imagine was quite a grand abbey at one point given how large it seems to be though it does seem to be a bit isolated (though this could just be the photo). Anyway it was a fun little sketch where I tried to not go too heavy on the shading it to try and make bits stand out but I’m not too sure if I like it (I definitely prefer the style of yesterdays sketch over this one).

Still the actual sketch is pretty nice and fairly accurate given that it was done quite quickly, though I’m hoping the actual image is a bit more interesting than this blog post as I don’t really have much else to say so yer, at least were all caught up again. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it and hopefully I’ll be back tomorrow!

Till then!

Day 557: Old Mill, Upper Slaughter

Day 557: Old Mill, Upper Slaughter

Reference image: Pinterest linkie!

So for yesterday I decided to try and sketch this lovely little water mill in Upper Slaughter (yes that is actually it’s name. God know what’s happened here to give it this name. I’m hoping it just had a lot of Slaughterhouses or something like that). Anyway I really liked the photo and the at the waterwheel was attached to these lovely old factories for decided to sketch it.

I also really happy with the way this came out. Not entirely sure why as some of my others have been a lot more refined but this is one of my favourites that I’ve done recently (maybe even for a long time). I think its the fact that I actually managed t get some definition between the different arts of the structure despite the actual tones not being that different from each other.

I also really like the sky in this despite it being done pretty crudely. Will definitely have to try this way of sketching a bit more in the future.

Till then!

Day 556: Boldt Castle, Germany

Day 556: Boldt Castle, Germany

Reference image: Pinterest linkie!

So another castle for day 556, this time without the tanned paper effect. Again it was just a random castle that caught my attention and that I thought wouldn’t take me all that long to sketch. Luckily though I had a bit more time than I thought I would have to do the sketch so it came out a bit better than I expected it too.

I especially really like the roofs and funnily enough the tree to the side . I think the water could probably have been represented a bit better but all in all I like how the sketch came out and learnt from it, that dark foliage can really help to frame a image, even if the reference photo shows it as a lot lighter.

Again I will try and get caught up tonight but given how the last couple of times I’ve said that have gone I wouldn’t advise that you hold your breath!

Till then!

Day 555: Swallows Nest, Ukraine

Day 555: Swallows Nest, Ukraine

Reference image: Pinterest linkie!

So, apologies again for the tanned photo quality. Apparently my phone really does want me to sketch in a tanned sketchbook.

Anyway for day 555, I found this stunning looking castle high atop a Cliffside in the Ukraine (if you have a look at the reference image you’ll notice that the cliff is a whole lot higher than my sketch would lead you to believe). Overall I quite like the sketch though I think that I may have chosen to go for a scale that was a bit too small to get the needed definition into the sketch. also the sky didn’t exactly turn out how I had planned but nevermind, you learn from your mistakes (or at least I hope I will).

So, got two more to go until were caught up again but that’s better than usual so I’m happy.

Till then!

Day 554: Pipes

Day 554: Pipes

(apologies for the colour of the above image. My kitchen lightbulb really hates me taking photos lol)

So, were back with industry for day 554. This was the image I was originally going to sketch when I did the Steel mill sketch (Day 544: Old Steel Corporation) and I wanted something that should be relatively quick and easy to sketch so I went back to it for day 554. Quite a fun sketch that came out pretty nicely with a bit of artistic license used as well (mainly due to bad sketch layout but we’ll just ignore that). I really lie how the pipe cam out and think I succeeded in making them the focal point of the sketch.

As mentioned in the last entry, I will try to get caught up tonight so hopefully I’ll be back later with day 555.

Till then!

Day 553: Shoal Creek Living Museum

Day 553: Shoal Creek Living Museum

Reference image: pinterest linkie!

So for the sketch a couple of days ago I choose the lovely image of what I assume is a old water wheel driven mill located at the Shoal Creek living museum. Really loved the reference image in particular the water wheel and thought I’d give sketching it a go. Luckily I had a bit of time to get a bit more than just the water wheel sketched and managed to finish the whole building which was nice.

Really like how the sketch came out as well especially the actual waterwheel which is the main part so it was nice that it came out well. I still think I need to be a bit more forceful with tones rather than trying to emulate the reference image completely.

Anyway I’ve got a few more days to go to get us caught up again as I need to make sure that I don’t fall behind too badly again so expect a couple more today at least.

Till then!

Day 552: French Tower, France

Day 552: French Tower, France

So, this random tower in the middle of a lake really caught my eye todays while browsing for inspiration. Really nice building, though I’ve no idea what it was actually used for, though it may just have been decorative as I can’t see it being fit for any other use but, this is beside the point as I just really liked the image.

Luckily, I’m pretty happy with the sketch too though I think I may have made it a bit dark in places but I’m pretty happy with how the water came out. Anyway I’m sorry but apparently I’ve decided that falling asleep is a good idea so I’ll have to cut this blog post short and see you all tomorrow.

Till then!

Day 551: Farmhouse and Barn

Day 551: Farmhouse and Barn

Reference image: Pintrest linkie!

So, this one was actually pretty much finished tot he stage where I’d want it to be. Quite a nice and interesting barn with a lot of different shapes joined together in it to give the overall structure with the farm fields in front. I unfortunately accidently squashed the building a little bit when compared to the reference image, but never mind, its only noticeable when you know what the reference image looks like and I’m still pretty happy with the actual sketch so let’s get todays uploaded!

Till then!

Day 550: Coram Tower, Lyme Regis

Day 550: Coram Tower, Lyme Regis

Refrence image: Personnal photo

So, managed to get a bit more of a detailed sketch done yesterday as opposed to the beach huts the day before. This tower is located opposite the first big car park that you come to as you head down the hill into Lyme (I’ve forgotten the name). A building that I’ve always found interesting I got some photos of it when I was getting my hair cut and decided to sketch one of them.

Really like the sketch actually, though it was one of them ones where I didn’t think it was going to work while I was actually sketching it. Kind of makes me want to do a larger version of it t I may save that for a actual drawing rather than a sketch, we’ll have to see.

Anyway, that’s all for yesterdays one. I may even have time to get todays uploaded and get us caught back up again as I seem to have had a bit of free time today despite what I said in the blog yesterday.

Till then!
